Hi! Giving you an update of our travels from the comfort of our van. The end of winter is just around the corner so we have started travelling again!
Three day road trip from Blenheim to Ohai We left our studio in Blenheim on the 4th of August and planned a three day roadtrip down to Southland where we had some woofing scheduled for two weeks. Our first stop was in Westport on the West coast. We’d been there before and the only interested for is this time was linked to surfing. We got there late but we squeezed in some fun in the waves the next morning before driving to Franz Josef. This part of the West coast is known for its two glaciers, one at Franz Josef and the other at Fox. We got a good look at the first one when we arrived. It was the first one either of us had seen anything like it and although the photographs don’t do it justice, it was impressive. The next day the weather was to bad to get anywhere near the second one, so we continued our journey to Queenstown. After one night at our last destination it was time to head to our hosts house in Ohai, Southland.
Woofing at Gaynor’s. Gaynor welcomed us into her home with her cat ( a few strays also from the village), her two goats and her hens. We had planned to stay with her for two weeks helping her around her house with cleaning, sanding and painting mostly. Ohai is a very small old mining village and most of the villagers make the most of the coal mine still operating to heat their homes. Gaynor was no exception and used a coal range to heat her home and water. Between our « work » days we had a few days off to go and explore the region, which was beautiful. If you want to be close to both the mountains and coast this is a great place to be. It also boasts a few lakes. On our days off we went caving at the Clifden caves, we drove along the coast between Riverton and Bluecliffs, and we went to lake Monowai. All very offering very different scenery yet all very close to one another.
A week in a cottage by the sea. We loved this part of the coast so much that we decided to rent a cottage in Riverton just by the sea when our woofing was over. We had a lovely week of relaxing, of daily walks by the sea and surfing for Pierre. The coast is very like the Britanny one, so this was good practice for if we decide to settle there when we get back. We also got the van ready to start sleeping in there again and leave the comfort we have got used to these past few months. Luckily the excitement of getting back to our old travelling habits outways that.
Bonjour tout le monde! On est presque à jour pour les articles du blog. Je vous écris depuis le confort de notre maison sur roue. Et oui nous avons enfin repris la route car l’hiver touche à sa fin.!
Trois jours de road trip de Blenheim à Ohai Nous avons quitté notre studio à Blenheim le 4 août pour repartir vers le Sud de l’île du Sud. Nous avons deux semaines de woofing de prévu dans le Southland à partir du 7. Le premier arrêt du roadtrip était à Westport, une ville que nous connaissions déjà. Nous sommes arrivés tard mais le lendemain matin nous avons eu le temps de sortir les planches de surf avant de reprendre la route pour Franz Josef. Cette partie de la côte Ouest est connue pour ses deux glaciers l’un à Franz Josef, l’autre à Fox. Nous avons pu voir le premier en arrivant en fin d’après-midi. Je n’avais jamais rien vu de tel, c’est vraiment impressionnant. Le lendemain le mauvais temps était au rendez-vous et nous ne nous sommes pas attardés du coup. Le dernier arrêt sur la route se fait à Queenstown avant de rejoindre Ohai et la maison de notre hôte le 7 août.
Woofing chez Gaynor
Gaynor nous a accueilli chez elle avec son chat ( quelques chats errants en plus) ses poules et des deux chèvres. Nous avions prévu de passer deux semaines chez elle pour l’aider avec du nettoyage, de la peinture et du ponssage. Ohai est un ancien petit village minier et la plupart des habitant profite toujours du charbon extrait de la mine toujours ouverte pour chauffer leur maisons. Gaynor n’y fait pas exception, elle a un ancien poêle à charbon pour chauffer sa maison, son eau et cuisiner. Durant notre séjour chez elle nous avons pu prendre quelques jours pour visiter la région qui est magnifique. On y trouve aussi bien une côte sauvage, que des montagnes enneigées et même plusieurs lacs. Nous sommes allé faire de la spéléologie dans les grottes de Clifden, nous avons visité la côte entre Riverton et Blue Cliff, fait le tour de la péninsule de Bluff à pied et le lac Monowai. Des paysages tous très différents mais tous aussi beaux les uns que les autres.

Nous avons tellement aimé cette partie de la côte qu nous avons décidé d’y louer une maison une fois le woofing terminé. Nous avons passé une très bonne semaine à se balader (pour moi), se reposer, surfer(pour Pierre). Nous en avons aussi profité pour préparer le van et acheter des duvets ( et oui l’hiver n’est pas tout à fait fini) pour la suite de l’aventure. Maintenant nous sommes prêts à quitter le confort des derniers mois pour reprendre la vie en van.
